I have started what I call a "learning blog." It is a place where I blog about things I have been curious about and have researched. I hope it'll be interesting at least to me, and maybe to others, and I am going to make a real effort to keep updating it, so it can be as long and glorious and fascinating as possible. If anyone wants to add it, it's http://lizlearns.livejournal.com/
That is all for now. :) |

[Jul. 2nd, 2008|06:24 pm] |
I worked in the ER today, just helping out with this and that, and a man who had just returned from a trip to Africa came in with a high fever. There was talk of malaria and other foreign infectious diseases, and I really felt bad for the guy, but he seemed to take it all in stride, which was cool. Then, I hear he is going to get a Lumbar Puncture (aka a spinal tap). Not ONLY did I get to be in the room right next to the doc throughout the whole procedure, but he was even nice enough to let me hold the anesthetic bottle so that he could keep his gloves on while filling the needle without breaking the sterile field. IT WAS AMAZING!!! Days like today are what I live for. :D |

My goodness, it's been so long. I have been up to my ears in busy-ness! I also haven't been getting online much when I've got time: usually it's when I've got a paper due and I have to email it to myself to print at school 10 minutes before class starts. :P I've done one final though, and I've got 2 more tests and 2 more last assignments (both half finished:)!) and then I'll be FREE! And then Dave and I are going to Lava Hot Springs, which should be a much-needed R&R session, and then I dive into my summer EMT class. I'm really nervous about it, because it seems like it'll be pretty intense, but then again I thought the same thing about the professional CPR class I had to take, and it was pretty easy and made me feel good! I really feel like if I ever came upon an emergency situation before the real professionals got there that I could do a pretty good job. 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths. (And I have a nice new breathing mask in my purse. Huzzah!) I'm super nervous for fall semester though. I'm going to be taking Human Anatomy, O-Chem 1(again), and as of now drawing for non-majors. Rachael told me when she took anatomy in one of her labs they used cats and in the other cadavers. I would MUCH rather work with cadavers, because at least the people chose to donate their bodies while they were alive, rather than having been put down because there are just too damn many of them (as I assume the cats were). Plus it just seems more practical to be studying a human body, as that's what I'll (hopefully) be working on later down the road. I guess this'll just be a mostly school post, as my free time seems to be dwindling both in amount and in interest. Mostly I just sleep or watch movies or read. I'm about 3/4 of the way through The Memory Keeper's Daughter, and I like it even though it's a bit more girly/romance novel-y than what I usually dig. It's good though! And it made me cry, which shows at least that it's absorbing. I just really like the author's prose, and the way she writes aligns pretty well with the way I experience things, so it's easy for me to get into it. We watched Eagle vs. Shark last night, mostly because a)it has Jemaine Clement in it, and he is absolutely brilliant in Flight of the Conchords, and b)Matt liked it a lot. It was super cute! In a dorky, almost painfully awkward kind of way, but only ALMOST painful. I enjoyed it quite a bit. :D Argh. I should really be typing this much into my Odyssey paper, and I think since I'm on a bit of a roll with forming sentences and whatnot :P that I'll pour my efforts into that instead now.
Tschüss! Liz |

I was diagnosed with Influenza A late Friday, after suffering from fever, chills, cough, aches, you name it, since Thursday. Yesterday was probably the worst day of my life. I was praying to pass out so I wouldn't have to experience it, but it's pretty hard to sleep when you're sneezing, hacking up a lung, puking the only 2 ounces of water left in your stomach up, or dry-heaving every 5 minutes. It was absolutely horrific. I recommend it to no one.
On the up side, today I just have a bad cough and some chills, so I guess it subsided relatively quickly. Seriously though, worst thing I can remember ever happening to me. |

It could have been because of the heavy symbolism it involved, I mean honestly the only thing missing was the dove with an olive branch, but it really brightened my outlook for at least the day, if not longer. I was buying gas, and the themes of war, violence, the middle east, and of course high gas prices were on my mind. As I left, I saw two men in military fatigues helping two Muslim women, hair-coverings and all, fix their flat tire. I doubt they were together, although it isn't impossible. It reminded me that everyone is still human, and when humans decide to treat each other with decency and kindness, great things can be done. It gave me a little more hope for the future. |

I think I said the most obscene thing in my entire life last night. I shan't repeat it here...
BUT I have also seen some AWFUL Christmas decorations that I'd like to document. You know, so I can re-read this post and laugh.
3. Blown-up Santa Claus on a motorcycle. "SC" written on the gas tank of the cycle. WTF?
2. Blow-up Joseph, Mary, and Jesus together. UGLY and borderline sacreligious.
1. WORST one this year....the entire front of the house was lit up with a GIGANTIC sphinx and a palm tree and some other egyptian-style shit, then the lawn was covered in white styrofoam blocks (I'm not sure what the significance was supposed to be, but it's awfully unsightly) with a sign on the house that reads "Sandy Claws." Worst pun-based decoration I've ever come across. Ick. |

18. I read, on both Eric and Lahaina's recommendations, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. I liked it quite a bit! It was cute, and funny, and even a little bit heart-wrenching, but not in the bad-mood-all-day way. It is a great little book, and I would recommend it to anyone!
19. Then, I finished another Michael Connelly, Lost Light. I didn't like it as much as the other two, but it still wove quite the intriguing story, and I enjoyed it a lot. Harry Bosch is a total badass. :P
20. The next book I have started is American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. So far, I understand but am annoyed by the constant lengthy descriptions. It does make it more realistic that this psycho would pay attention to such minute details in everything, but it doesn't make for very interesting reading. The dialogue is much better, but there is less of it, which stinks. I'm still debating if I'm going to stick it out with this one or just start another. Has anyone else read it? What did y'all think, if so? Is it worth my time? |

| | Radiohead | ] | SUCH a frustrating thing happened to me this morning! I left myself not quite enough time to get to class (I would have been 5 or fewer minutes late though), and as I get off the freeway at 13th, I notice no one is going anywhere and there are some police trucks with flashing lights. So, I think oh gosh there's an accident that sucks. But no. After 9 minutes of waiting, I finally see what all the fuss is about. They're hauling a GIANT fucking TREE that takes up all three lanes dragging behind the truck down thirteenth. Holy hell. It was ridiculous. Probably 20 minutes of delay because someone decided it was a better idea to drag this behemoth down THIRTEENTH EAST (oh, and then 21st south...) than to chop it up first. ARGH I was so mad! And then, also, they still have the barricades set up right at the merge, even though NO WORK IS BEING DONE. I really need to find an alternate route in the morning. Fuck traffic. The end. |

So I re-read a book that my dad read to me when I was little, called The House with The Clock in Its Walls by John Bellairs, and it was a bit below my usual reading level (but not so much as to be a children's book), but I liked it a lot. The author did a great job of mixing the everyday with the crazy magic stuff that happened. I'm glad to have re-read it.
Then, I read a book recommended by Dave. It's called The Narrows by Michael Connelly. Murder mystery, not a challenge, but it was AWESOME! It's like that action movie you hate to like, but it's entertaining. I'm in the middle of another book by Connelly, and he's really good at weaving an intricate plot. Of course we know what's going to happen at the end, but how the HELL are they going to pull it off? Yeah, I enjoyed it a whole lot. :D |

The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster
I really liked this book, but it was described to me by a friendly acquaintance as "SUCH a crazy book!" and I didn't think that of it. I thought the ending was a very tense situation, but I had expected it, so maybe he hadn't seen it coming or something, but I think I wasn't as shaken by it. Regardless, it was a wonderful, enjoyable, exciting read. Eric recommended it to me, which I'm quite glad of, and now I want to check out more by the author. :)

I finished it! Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. It's my dad's favorite book, so I thought I'd give it a shot, and I really liked it! Man, was it long though. I spent a good chunk of time on the airplane to and from Michigan reading it, and still it took me about another week to get to the end. It's really dense too, lots of philosophy, but I took it slow and really got into it. :D

I just finished In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer by Irene Gut Opdyke. It was amazing. Without giving too much away, this poor young Polish girl (she was 17 when the Polish occupation started) saved the lives of twelve Jews directly, and many others indirectly, by sending word to the ghetto when there was a raid coming. GREAT, AMAZING heartwarming book. It gave me a real perspective adjustment. Man. She's officially one of my heroes now.

I FINALLY finished The Pleasure of Finding Things Out by Richard Feynman. It's a collection of speeches, essays, interviews and other short literary works by or of Richard Feynman. He was a super-mega genius who worked on the Manhattan Project (atomic bomb, anyone?), but he also won the Nobel Prize for figuring some super-advanced physics shit out. No, I don't completely understand what exactly he did, but you don't have to to read the book. He's got a funny personality, and he doesn't talk about science all the time. It took me probably a year to get through this book (obviously I stopped and started), but it was well worth it.

I just thought... I read all 784 pages of the seventh Harry Potter and didn't even think to count it as a book I read. Well, you better damn well believe it. I also LOVED it! There was SOOOOO much scary stuff and shit got real, well, pretty much after page 5 or so. I love how J.K. wrapped everything up so well, and I thought it was the perfect end to a pretty good series. One of my favorite of the books. (I'll admit, not all 7 were awesome).

Wow it's been a while since I've LJ-ed. First the internet was out for-fucking-ever, and when I check stuff like email at school and whatnot, I'm not thinking about writing a big long LJ post. Or really one at all. THEN we fixed the internet on the day that my computer decides not to cooperate. The start menu and icons wouldn't pop up no matter what I did. So I took it to the shop, the guy who greeted me saw the same problem I had, and yet two days ago the tech guy calls and tells me he couldn't find anything wrong with my computer except for a little bit of spyware, which he cleaned up. Well, sorry dude, but I have a program to do that already. So I paid $32 (ALL OF THE MONEY I HAVE IN MY NAME) for absolutely nothing. Totally fucking unfair. But at least I have my computer back. I guess.
ANYWAY, in Italy I read 4 books in 2 weeks. Not bad, if I say so myself. Would've read more if I had brought more books I'm interested in. And the Bob Dylan book is officially uninteresting. As far as I can tell, it's a bunch of namedropping, and him going to this and that club and meeting this and that person, and for the past 2 chapters that's all that's happened! So maybe I'll start it again someday, but for now it's an abandoned project.
First, I read The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho. I read The Alchemist and loved it, so I wasn't really surprised at how sucked in I got with this one too. I finished it the second day we were there (although planes and trains do provide a seemingly endless opportunity to read). I'm even a little tempted to try some of the meditations he described, just because his response seems so strong that it can't be totally fiction.

Next up was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Husseini. I also read his other book first, The Kite Runner, but I liked this one more than it. It's written from the point of view of two Muslim women in Kabul, and it really made me more aware of the reason for the burqas and the general attitude over there, even if I don't hold the same beliefs. I absolutely loved this one as well, and I'd recommend it to anyone and EVERYONE.

Then I read The Wanting Seed by Anthony Burgess. And no, I haven't read A Clockwork Orange. I didn't really realize it was going to be a dystopic novel, and I have to say that there were some major similarities between it and the other dystopian tales I've read, but I still enjoyed it. Especially the attitude with which Anthony Burgess writes, it's a fun read if not the most innovative. I guess even that's not totally fair to say, because he wrote it a while ago (obviously), but I guess I'm sort of jaded to the stories about a super-industrialized world run by the government with an iron grip. The story within it was pretty good though.

And the last one I finished was To Kill a Mockingbird. I never read it in school, and I'm actually really glad. It's not that I didn't think about the book, I did, but I'm glad the analysis wasn't shoved down my throat the way it tended to be in high school. I got really into the story, I love the characters, and I definitely think it deserves to be considered a classic (as it is). Harper Lee created a really great story, and even though racial segregation isn't as much of a problem as it was then, it's still just as relevant.

| BOOK SIX |
[Aug. 1st, 2007|07:18 pm] |
It has been quite a while since I posted anything. My dad's a poo and won't fix the internet for me, I'm betting because he just plugs his computer directly into the modem and it works for him, but the router's shit so we can't both. And for some reason unknown to me, it doesn't work if I plug my computer directly in. Go figure.
So I finished another book! Even with stopping halfway through Bob Dylan and starting "World's End," which is giant, AND being interrupted in my reading when Harry Potter came out, I still managed to start and finish one. It's called I Cried, You Didn't Listen by Dwight Abbott. It's about a kid who goes into Juvie when he's 8 (9?) because his parents get in a bad car accident and there's nowhere for him to go. It continues with the hell he had to endure in and out of prisons his whole life. Kind of depressing, but the author is so eloquent and has such interesting insights that I'd say it was worth it to me to read. Thanks Jeanette!
